Build it (pond) and they will come…

I built my pond last summer.

I’ve had lots of blanket weed issues and still haven’t planted it up sufficiently BUT….
…..I went out earlier, for the first time since last Autumn, to see if the water boatmen had survived the harsh winter and blanket weed…..

(forgive the pictures; they’re from a badly, excitedly shot video)

    Brilliant @TheGreenMan  :)
I look forward to seeing any further progress with your planting etc, and of course- some more pix of your visitors  ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Very cool!
    New England, USA
Metacomet soil with hints of Woodbridge and Pillsbury
  • Ah brilliant :) We put a pond in our new build garden in July last year. No amphibians resident or spawning yet, although we spotted some visitors last year. So excited to see it develop over the spring and summer this year!

We don't get newts here, just frogs, and predominantly toads at the last house. However, we're a few hundred yards from a small NT garden so that impacts the amount of wildlife that actually comes in and stays.
The 'single' frog that was here for a good few years has disappeared - probably found some pals over there instead...  ;)
It's great to have a pond though - all sorts use them. A great source in a garden whether big or small @katarney, so I hope you get a lot of pleasure from it .  :)

We had some charming visitors yesterday - a pair of Mandarin ducks :)
They were spotted first on the yard eating corn with 'our' mallards. They then flew up and over the house and landed on the big pond, where they had a brief courtship display and then mated!
Afterwards they hung around for a good while,  swimming a bit and perching on a log by the water's edge, looking very relaxed. They then went exploring, over the grass to the little pond and on again towards the Dell. Then a final foray to the yard for a refill before flying off. We are hoping they liked it enough to come again and maybe move in :)
