Cut Down Laurels, and surprise.

Just chain-sawed down my Laurels. They were unruly and about 20 years since planted. As a result, I found a large number of shoots presumable from the roots. I need to thin them out.
Is it enough to cut unwanted shoots to the ground and dab a little household paint on the open shoot. And to make the remainder strong and virile should I cut down shoots to say 12"?

The paint will do no good and be a PITA to do.   Just cut back to the ground all the shoots you don't want and leave the ones you like the look of between 30 to 45cms long (12 to 18 inches).  They will soon produce shoots which you can then leave or rub off according to which way they're growing so you get coherent regrowth.

Laurel is so vigorous, especially after a good prune, that you may need to go in and referee again to remove wayward stems and shorten others to encourage thickening.
