Carrots and peas

Hi all, I direct sowed carrots about 3 weeks ago and peas 2 weeks ago.

There is no sign of either of them germinating. I realise I was probably too early (north east England).

If I am patient, will the seeds eventually germinate? Or will I have to start again once temperatures are a little higher.

I'd say for the peas, Jim, you're a bit early.  Mine have been up for about a week but we're much warmer than you.

When I do carrots, which isn't every year, I do them direct into large containers as the soil here wouldn't be great for them. I don't do that until May, so end of this month would probably have been a better time for you..
I'd say too early for the peas as well.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Thanks. I'll be more patient next year

If you want to get a head start, Jim, you might like to get hold of some 5-litre clear plastic water bottles, sprinkle a few carrot seeds and place the bottles on top (held in place with a cane etc.).  You'll create a mini-climate and keep the fly off them.

Sorry I don't grow peas, but I have put my carrot seeds in today. They are in a raised bed under a closhe that has been warming the soil since last month. As I am in the East Midlands that  is the earliest I would try.
  • Carrots take along this no matter soil temperatures
that why they recommend planting radish between
the rows of carrot.. the carrots start to sprout just as
    radish are ready to harvest.
  • I sowed Early Nantes in late February and they germinated on April 1st.(!). They were grown in polystyrene boxes, where they have the benefit of warmth and easy care.
