Moss

At the bottom of our rear garden we have our 'summer house' a small wooden open sided building where we chill out in summer. This building is overshadowed by a large acer and this has caused a large build up of moss on the roof - it looks quite attractive. Over the past few weeks I have noticed moss on the floor and have suddenly realized that it is coming off the roof of the summer house:

Anyone any idea what is causing this - not too bother but just intrigued?
At about 750 feet on the western edge of The Pennines. Clay soil.

If it's nice and dry, many birds will also gather it for nests at this time of year.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Magpies particularly enjoy chucking out bits in our gutters. They're welcome to as much as they like- we have no shortage of it!
If you've ever seen a small bird's nest - blue tits, robins etc, it contains quite a lot of dry moss.
