Moss

At the bottom of our rear garden we have our 'summer house' a small wooden open sided building where we chill out in summer.  This building is overshadowed by a large acer and this has caused a large build up of moss on the roof - it looks quite attractive.  Over the past few weeks I have noticed moss on the floor and have suddenly realized that it is coming off the roof of the summer house:

Anyone any idea what is causing this - not too bother but just intrigued?

At about 750 feet on the western edge of The Pennines.  Clay soil.

Birds often collect moss for their nests. Perhaps they drop some on the way!

I'd guess birds. The magpies/crows are always chucking bits off the roofs here.
If it's nice and dry, many birds will also gather it for nests at this time of year.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Birds makes sense as we are surrounded by trees full of nests - puzzled why it hasn't happened in previous years, or I haven't noticed.

You may not have noticed, but they also might have found something else for their nests, or it was wet at the time etc..  :)
Magpies particularly enjoy chucking out bits in our gutters. They're welcome to as much as they like- we have no shortage of it!
If you've ever seen a small bird's nest - blue tits, robins etc, it contains quite a lot of dry moss.  :)
