I personally would get rid of it, considering its unshapely shape and the fact that those plants are prone to sudden death anyway. But it's your choice.
I love Ceanothus but I agree that's not the prettiest specimen. In a new garden you don't have to keep anything you don't like, but if you don't need that spot for something else you could wait and see how it develops when left alone for a bit. It looks quite old so it might not live for many more years anyway, so don't feel bad if you decide to get rid.

I am not a fan of the blue flowers of Ceanothus..but others love them.
