how to plant a moss lawn

How do I plant a moss lawn in London and SWE, and can it be grown on top of a woven weed membrane?

You need dank conditions to grow moss - constant moisture and shade. Without these it will go brown. Moss can grow on lots of different surfaces provided constant moisture and shade are present so I don't see why weed membrane would present a problem, maybe cover with a thin layer of soil. But moss is a wonderful thing for weed seeds to germinate in, so you may find weeds popping up and if you let them get too large, you will not be able to remove them without removing large sheets of moss which they are rooted into.

If you have the right conditions it is easy to grow a mossy lawn. Plenty of rain and shade produces that for me. But a  Japanese style moss lawn demands constant weeding out of every windblown seedling and is very labour intensive - see any video on Japanese gardens!

Yes, you can plant one.  And yes, it would go on top of a membrane, but not directly.

One of the wetter parts of  Soth West England might be better than London.

Maintenance is another problem, as has been pointed out.  What effect do you seek?  There have been past posts on alternatives to moss in Japanese-style gardens.

    Nods

I don't know how to create one. I just try to make an ordinary lawn and end up with moss. Compacted clay soil, a lot of rain and at least partial shade and voila! Moss

I am in SW London, I have an ordinary grass lawn, which is wildflower meadow (dandelion lawn?) in spring, dry brown grass in summer and moss lawn in autumn and winter.

I know my answer is not very helpful but what I am trying to say is, it is very hard to have something specific without a lot of maintenance and watering in London. I have given up on weeding because I dont want to use weeding chemicals and weed seeds are bound to come in with so many gardens in close proximity.
