Thank you - I just wasn’t sure if it was supposed to have more shoots closer to the root, it’s quite bare up until the ends. I didn’t do much with it at all last year as I had a newborn in the summer so thought I might’ve missed the boat on a bit of pruning or something if it was supposed to be a bit bushier.
Aren't climbing roses supposed to be leggy? Isn't that what you bought it for, to climb?
The task you have is training, not pruning. Train it to where you would like it to flower. You can be rough. Watch it, it may fight back. But "The New Dawn" is not yhe thorniest.
Note: "The" not "a", it's part of the name and confusingly often listed alphabetically under "T".
"New Dawn" is simply "New Dawn", not "The" or "A", not listed under "T" by any rose grower or seller that I've heard of.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Just an update (and another question!) - rose is doing really well, thank you for your advice.
I’m not quite sure what to do with these secondary stems. They’re sticking out quite far. I’m happy to leave them if that’s what’s usually done. I tried to bend one towards the trellis and it snapped so not sure what to do!
