Weeds - help help help!

Hi all

So. For 5 years I've been fighting weeds in our driveway. Sadly the people who build the house made the driveway out of old hardcore, and it's a fair size so we won't be able to afford to put a proper impenetrable surface down for a few years.

Quite a large area of this awful substrate has inevitably been infested with weeds that creep slowly in to the middle. Every year we spend about 10-20 days doing nothing but digging them up. The problem is we never truly get the root of a lot of these things as they are down in the rubbley earth.

I've tried weed killer and it didn't do much. Some of the weeds looked scorched for a while and then things just grew back very fast.

Because it's so rocky would a tiller/cultivator/rotavator do anything?

The weeds are mainly dandelios, grass, and various thistle things.

All made twice as hard as have young baby so hours in the garden are both limited and precious.

Would appreciate any thoughts or advice Smiling

I think it would be more likely to damage the rotavator. Have you tried glyphosate? Best in the growing season and takes about 3 weeks for the result but it usually works.

Not sure but would a flame/weed gun work?
  • I have yes. I’d used it on other parts of the garden and it worked really well but it just didn’t do the job on this patch. It’s quite dry and they’re not very lush so I just assumed that was why the weed killer didn’t do it 🤷🏼‍♀️ Perhaps I should have another go?

They’re driving me absolutely insane. I didn’t think a group of weeds could drive someone to distraction like this 😂

Last year I used SBK,  50/50 with water,  diluting as per instructions made no difference to deep stubborn weeds.

10 - 20 days a year is not much time in the scheme of life/things to get rid of weeds.
Sadly blaming the previous owners is .....sad.

Until you can afford to replace it with a harder non permeable surface just use a strong weed killer applied correctly at the right times of year as has been suggested.
It really is best if you check out the types of weed killer available, and which does best for the weed types that thrive there. Read the instructions and application times and rates carefully.
You should not have to do more than apply something  three or four times a year, once you have the weeds under control to keep it looking not too bad until you can afford to replace the area.

We have lived in the same property for 30 plus years, we get weeds that come in from surrounding properties . Very annoying when one takes care of ones own.
Weeding is an ongoing thing. If I only had to take 10-20 days removing things that are caused by other lazy people I would not mind.

No need to be so incredibly rude! 10-20 days on one fairly small area is a bit ridiculous. Wind your neck in and enjoy your weeds.

I suspect that the weedkiller you used killed the weeds … but then more weeds grew in their place.

If you are happy to use it, you could use Weedol Pathclear which contains a pre-emergent ingredient which prevents seeds germinating and any plants growing for up to 3 months

Please be sure to follow the instructions carefully as it’s pretty potent stuff.

Our main treatment for driveway weeds, yholland1, is a liberal dose of common salt that we buy fairly cheaply in large sacks from the local farmers co-op, but as an alternative, would it be possible to cover the drive in strong builders membrane for several months at a time, if only in parts?  It's a sure way of deterring weeds on my veg plot, but maybe not practical for your drive.

    SALT!!!!
That should kill every living creature in the vicinity.

Sadly to keep your drive in order that is the kind of time you need to devote to keeping it clear. All gardening is more time consuming than we realise.
You have a busy life, perhaps the drive just waits whilst you concentrate on special things?
I agree with @punkdoc avoid salt.
