Sunflower

I've tried to grow these for many years without success. I'm going to have another go this year. Planting seeds direct into the garden mid April, covering with plastic bottles. Any tips greatly welcomed

I’d plant them into a little pot and plant them out when about a couple of inches tall if it were me . But you may be lucky doing it your way . Make sure it’s in a sunny spot for best results obvs .

I agree, try starting some in pots. Something might be eating your direct-sown seeds before they germinate or eating the new shoots as soon as they appear.

I have grown a variety called Little Leo @sherylfrance6GMnXco9p It makes about 45cm and is lovely to grow. I tend to plant seeds inside and then plant out in May, which works for me, as I really don't like them really tall as here the wind would get them.😁
  • Thank you. I'll look for these and take your advice

The seeds should be easily available in GC @sherylfrance6GMnXco9p 😁

I sowed some a few days ago using trays divided into modules.  They are in a plastic covered shelving unit inside the unheated polytunnel.  It gets t-shirt warm by day and not too cool at night.

I checked them today and already have 30% or more germination.  Can't remember the names but both short varieties, one yellow and one verious shades of tawny, red and yellow.   Chuffed to pieces.

  • That's Brilliant. Well done. After lots of advice I'm going to sow mine indoors. Let's hope I'm lucky this year 🤞🙏
