Please may I ask a ( slightly) related question? I haven't sown them yet but I bought courgette (verde di milano and shooting star ) seeds. I was going to wait till easter to sow. I did read that ( in theory anyway) all courgettes could be persuaded to grow a bit upwards with staking and tying in, some ( shooting star) more naturally. My q is this -- I can only grow in pots , but read v varied views on how much room is needed. Could 10-litre pots suffice per single plant ( I realise will need endless watering if summer like last year). Similarly , could i grow ( say ) 6 ( individual, not multiplug ) sweet peas in a 10 litre pot with tall canes?.
I can buy bigger vigoroot-type growbags if essential , but would be more sustainable ( and cheaper!) to use the largest grower pots from volunteering venue ( who are only too happy for volunteers to take them).
@Desi_in_London You want to wait to sow courgetes until 2-3 weeks before your last frost date they can't be put outside until all risk of frost is gone and they are fast growing so will quickly outgrow a window ledge. For me Easter is a month to early I won't be sowing mine until the middle of May.
Yes you can grow any courgette in a pot but 10L will be very small it'll grow and you will get fruit but it will probably be on the small side and stop early in the season. I don't think I would try in anything smaller than 25L and preferably larger than that. Remember as well that if you do manage to get it to grow well it's going to get very top heavy and want to fall over.
