Cutting back eucalyptus

zugeniezugenie Posts: 831
I have a eucalyptus in a pot, I’ve got a larger pot for it so will be potting it on, but I was wondering if I could give it a fairly hard chop (once the frost risk has passed) to encourage some new growth, as it’s looking a bit scraggily at the moment:

How far down could I cut it?

  • Assuming you bought the eucalyptus for its circular foliage, the only way to keep them is to keep your tree coppiced or clipped back to almost the stump every year or two. Eucalyptus are a very quick growing tree, quickly reach 20/30 ft in a few years so repot it now and be aware if you feel like planting it in the ground because it will take off and it will soon begin to produce the typical elongated oval leaves. You could trim it back by about half now if you want to keep its size down. I would not give it any extra feed any time, that willhelp to keep its size down.
