Tomato Plants

Sowed tomato seed in seed pots. They have germinated well and have their true leaves but don't seem to be getting any bigger and have very little roots so far. Should I pot them on to slightly bigger pots or leave alone until there is a decent root system?

Did you use seed compost? I would pot them on, using multi purpose compost.

Thanks. Sown in multi purpose compost. I have more than I need so may pot on some and leave some and see what happens.

I've found over the years that some varieties are keener to get "going" once germinated than others.

There are always more tomato seedlings than one needs!  But there are always some grateful peeps who didn't get round to sowing any and are happy to take one's excess plants.

Yes I do that each year!
  • @Kitty52 I don’t know where you are, but my tomato plants have like me not seen much of sunshine. We are end March and in case the grey weather stops at some point, they will grow very fast.

    I my garden.

A lot of compost you buy has very little nutrient added. I sow my toms in 3” pots in a heated propagator and after they show true leaf I give them a 1/4 strength seaweed feed every 3 or 4 waterings. When potting them on I bury the stem as has been suggested earlier but I also mix a very small quantity of low NPK organic fertiliser into the potting mix.

I know it’s not rocket science but this has worked well for many years.

I don't know whereabouts you are @Kitty52, but I've only just sown mine, and that's pretty standard for my conditions.
    It's only the 1st of April  :)

I’m Scotland too. I always feel I’m too late so started earlier!! Hopefully okay in long run.
