Scotland

Hi All,
Just moved to Perthshire in Scotland and looking for help and advice on what to plant! My last garden was in Tasmania so my knowledge is limited in respect to weather etc etc. If there are any specific books or even someone that can give some hands on advice that would be great.
Many thanks
John

Hello John and welcome to the Forum. Goodness me but you will notice a difference in temperatures!  I'm not clear on whether you have moved to a new build property or an established house? If it is the latter, it would be well worth waiting to see what pops up in your garden through the next month or so.
There is a member on the Forum, @Fairygirl, who lives in Scotland and she will be able to give you lots of brilliant advice about what will thrive.
Good luck getting settled in and drop by here for any assistance you need.

  • Many thanks. No not a new build but the garden is pretty empty as I think it may have been an executive rental so there are perenials around but need to get some climbing roses etc.

You won't be too far from Glendoick Garden Centre. Very helpful staff that are all plant lovers themselves. I've used them for years.

Hi @jonathanmills1000_8bQEjYn - hope you enjoy your new home - both the building and the country  :)
I'm in the west, so our climate is very different from lovely Perthshire [much wetter]  but if you can give us an idea of what kind of garden you have, or are hoping to have, and maybe a photo or two, that will help. The icon that looks like a hill is the one for photos.

@Silver surfer is based in Perthshire and will be able to give you loads of excellent advice, and another forum member @Balgay.Hill is in the kingdom of Fife, where the climate is more suited to what you'll have, and that can be very useful.  :)

As far as books are concerned, I used ones by the old favourites when I started out - people like Geoff Hamilton and Alan Titchmarsh. The latter's How to be a Gardener is full of good general info, but the main thing to remember that a lot of info is defined by more southern temps and climates, and we're around 4 weeks behind everything in terms of sowing seed etc - shorter season altogether.
Beechgrove will be starting soon on TV, so that's worth watching, as the info is more accurate for those of us up here too.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I thought that's where you were @Balgay.Hill! Didn't realise it was Dundee - my humble apologies, and have you got any cake? :D

You're just over the 'watter' fae the kingdom though...   ;)
