The house where I had it was a water mill in SW France. River flooded the garden in winter and it baked dry in summer. That hypericum even survived 1985 when it went down to -25° that winter. It was under trees along the drive, lawn on the other side. Served it's purpose and its flowers brightened up a dull spot.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
A plant that can fill a difficult spot is always worth consideration. I am pleased that plants like this Hypericum are available for a challenging area. With the kind of growing conditions that we have faced in the last twelve months there will be more limitations to what we can grow and no plant should be 'written off'.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
So wet and windy here in North Devon today, I'll be surprised if everything just doesn't end up waterlogged. I can see lots of casualties from the continued cold weather we had over the Winter. Today is definitely not a day to get outside and sort the garden out. I'm dying to do so because until I do it feels like I am gardening in someone else's space ! It feel strange to move home and have someone else's problems and bad planting decisions to deal with out there. For example, whoever would want a goat willow that grows to tremendous heights in a small-ish garden !!
