Mexican Fleabane?

This is our Fleabane at the white stage. When the flowers disappear, their little flower heads turn to fuzz balls of thousands of seeds. These blow off when ready all over the place. We have a potted lavender right underneath this wall pot, many seeds end up there and grow away quite happily. I then take them out and pot some up and then have next years plants ready. I find them in the paving slabs edges, in the cracks, in our planters, they are marvellous little things and very easily pulled out if not wanted. Their displays are lovely and last all through summer and beyond. They also work well in borders at ground level.

Does anyone know if Erigeron Glaucus "Sea Breeze" is essentially the same flower as Mexican Fleabane (in terms of growing behaviour, ease of growing etc.) They look similar.
Thinking of getting some of these too . . .

I've never grown E. glaucus but I believe the individual flowers are bigger than on E. karvinskianus and the plants more stocky without the light and airy feel.

I had some in my garden when I moved here.  @JennyJ’s description is spot on, it’s a less delicate plant but worth having if you prefer the colour.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

  • And the usual question. Plug plants - instructions almost always seem to say - grow in pots. But why can one not just put them straight in (using potting soil) - wherever you want to grow them? Does the hardiness of a plant make any difference?
There is no frost predicted for the next week (and maybe Spring might even start soon - there was a bee in the garden today)

Small plug plants can be quite vulnerable to slugs etc (although I've never had any damage on my erigeron seedlings) so the general advice is to pot them up and grow on until they're a decent size before planting out. As for cold weather, plug plants of something that's normally hardy will probably have been grown under glass so they need proper hardening off before you put them out in the open garden, and that's easiest in pots.

The advice to grow plugs on is so you can't complain if you plant them out and they die. They are safer in pots with some shelter until they are bigger. That doesn't mean they will necessarily die if you plant them out, just that the risk is greater

Have both - Erigeron definitely a lot bigger flowers and pleasantly enthusiastic ground cover in a good way. Only planted Mexican Fleabane last summer but its a bit more delicate, wafty and flowers are a lot smaller.
  • Any idea of spacing for the fleabane as there are no instructions regarding that on the leaflet I received with the small plug plants.
Wondering if they need to be together or whether I can space them and they will spread and fill any big gaps . .

How is the spread on the Erigeron (I am expecting a few plugs in the next few days). So thinking where I might plant them in regard to the Mexican Fleabane and also the crazy paving spaces etc.
