I sometimes use fertilisers, but I aknowledge it's a bit of belt-and-bracers. All plants need N, P & K, plus vital minerals. Why not use the cheapest? Probably Growmore. If there is a mineral deficiency that can be met with a specific treatment.
On my lawn, I can see quickly the effect of Nitrogen and Iron, but nothing else makes a noticeable difference. I spead home-made compost in the spring and notice an extra greenness, which must be from nitogen.
In the open garden, I rely on the natural feriliity. In pots I use good compost, usually JI.
I don't use Hoof & Horn, or Blood Fish and Bonebecause my dog is attracted to it. Not to mention foxes and the rest.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand. "Have nothing in your garden that you don't know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
