Tulip 'Fashion'

1945crewood1945crewood Posts: 170
My good lady has had a great showing with a tulip called 'Fashion' this year but now it's starting to go over. The problem is, neither of us have any idea what to do now so I'm looking for help.

As we're new to tulips, can anyone advise what we should be doing next please? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

@1945crewood Guess you are in the south as they have finished very early. They are in the Kaufmanniana group which I thought flowered in April?
I assume you have deadheaded them? You must leave them now to die back until they are brown. This helps to feed the bulb. Tulips are not always as good year two, infact some gardeners dig them up and start again. However I would certainly try 'Fashion' again in year two as it is a very reliable form.

Not too far from yourself actually Suze, I'm in darkest Derbyshire.

Not deadheaded yet, is that the first thing we do please and when you say 'leave them' to go brown, do you mean the stalks? Thanks for all te help.

When the petals have gone I cut the flower head off just below where the petals were. This stops the bulbs using energy to make seeds. There is chlorophyll in the green stalk so it helps the leaves build up the bulb. If you feel the flower  stalks are intrusive cut them off further down. Make sure the bulbs don’t dry out and feed them with tomato fertiliser. You clear the old leaves when they go brown in early summer. I’m in the NE and my tulips are early this year too.

Kaufmanniana Tulips have a longer season than I realised a really good choice
@Bilje has given you perfect advice.

@1945crewood My favourite Tulip is the Lily flowered 'Ballerina' you would think it is pink by it's name, infact it is orange. In bud here at the moment.
If you love tulips with careful choices you can have a succession if flowers all through April too.
