Acer - just curious

This acer will spread seeds all over the shop in a few weeks but I never see a seedling.
Are some acers sterile?

Maybe just hard to germinate.  I have sown acer seeds before (snake bark) and had nothing.  Planning to try again with soaking first and then stratification.

I have a big acer palmatum dissectum in my front garden and every year I find some seedlings by Summer.
I used to have a gravel drive and when I had that they popped up all over it.
The seedlings are similar to the parent, but the leaves (at that stage at least) don't seem as finely dissected.

  • A friend of mine has a fantastic specimen, but I have no clue what one it might be.  It's huge, and it produces thousands of seedlings throughout the summer, but they usually get mowed down.  I've tried multiple times to dig some up and raise them, but they always die, but I attribute that to my incompetence.
