Trailing Fuchsias; pinching out the tip and taking cuttings

Jenny_AsterJenny_Aster Posts: 945
My 6 VooDoo trailing fuchsias are happily sitting in their 3in pots after arriving last week as plugins. They're about 3in tall at the moment.

Just musing about them, and wondering when I should be pinching out their growing tips?

My thoughts are to wait till they are about double their present size before I snip off about an inch or so off their growing tip. Then would it be possible or worth it, to use the tips to strike cuttings?

If you want more plants it's be worth a go. You'd need to take off longer pieces with at least couple of leaf nodes each rather than just nipping out the growing points.

I personally wouldn't think about cuttings when they are so small.  Given a bit more growth, if you feel they need pinching out you could try a tip in water maybe but I'd suggest more than an inch.
I take cuttings from standard Fuchsias in late Autumn and they are usually rooted and ready to grow on by Spring.
I'm sure there are some experienced fuschia growers on here so hopefully you will get some knowledgeable advice :)

Thank you @JennyJ and @philippasmith2 . Think I can go too far sometimes in trying to avoid waste. Snipping off a lovely growing tip is a bit sacrilege, but that's what's gardening is all about, snipping a bit here and there can make a plant much stronger.

Just do a pinch of the end buds on each stem with your thumbnail.  That will make them bush out without waste and then, later in the season, you'll have plenty of material for decent cuttings.

Thank you! That's now my plan.
