Bare root roses - is it too late to plant

Dilip_UKDilip_UK Posts: 114
Planning on planting one or two roses. Is it still okay to plant bare root as we approach end of March?. If not than will go for potted but I gather bare root is better to establish the plant, potted ones can take awhile. Not decided on variety of rose yet, most likely be a shrub not a bush. Welcome any your suggestions. Thank you.

Sorry should have added, I live in S. London, the ground is not frozen solid. Was doing some digging over the weekend, the soil was easy to work with.

Personally l would say it's not too late provided you do it in the next few days. The season seems to be around 2 weeks behind to me (South West UK),  l was planting bare root roses on 18th March, generally speaking l would normally have them in the ground at the beginning of the month.

@AnniD, thanks for the note. Was planning on ordering online today, probably a DA rose. So may take a few days for delivery and planting. Yes I normally plant in Feb but due to various constraints, its only now I have been able to get the ground ready.

Whether I buy them early or late in the planting season I always put bare root roses in a deep, square pot - like rose growers use - for their first year so they can grow a healthy new root system in peace without disturbance or competition.  It does mean I can take them into shelter if it gets really cold or really hot and I do have to monitor watering and feeding but I do get good results that way.

@Obelixx, ohhh thank you. That's a great tip. I have large paved area with a 3 foot square in the centre. That is where I will plant the rose, no competition and very little disturbance, so hopefully it will be okay. I do like the idea of placing bare root in deep square pots to develops the roots during early/late season. Thank you.
