Hydrangea pruning

Help! I didn't get around to deadheading my hydrangea last summer and haven't pruned it back yet. However, it has started to sprout healthy new leaves - is it ok to cut it back now?
Thnx.

April is the time I dead head mine,  just take them down to a pair of strong buds.  If you need to do a really big cut down you’ll lose the flowers for this year.
you can either cut them all right down to the ground or you can just take out a third of the stalks down to the ground.   I prefer to cut mine all down and lose flowers for the year but they’re even better next,  the choice is yours.
Depends on how big your plant is now.

How you prune depends on what type of Hydrangea you have. Paniculatas for eg to Mopheads.
How can you lie there and think of England

@punkdoc. I assumed that as the OP would normally have cut them back and deadheaded last year that they were not Paniculata but mophead or lace caps.
