Is my palm dead???

During the winter my Phoenix canariensis (canary date palm) started going brown.

Not sure if it was the prolonged cold or maybe some fallen dead leaves stuck in the fronds caused a reaction.

Either way it looks crispy and brown. There is some green still in the body but I don’t see how it can come back if I chop all its fronds back :/

Is it beyond help? Is there something I can do for the poor fella?

Any advice gratefully received

The cold has mine looking similar. I’m leaving it alone and waiting to see if any new spears emerge.

All palms grow from a central apical bud ; if this is undamaged you could remove all frosted material and hope recovery is as swift as P.canariensis allows ; not the hardiest palm to cultivate in the UK .
  • Thank you for the thoughts! I’ll wait until it looks like we’ve had the last frost then cut everything back and see if some new shoots appear 🙏
  • Best to remove the dead once frost stop, or you could cover it when you know frost is coming. Getting rid of the dead keeps the plant from trying feed it
It will then once cut back it will feed the healthy. Will be beautiful. Good luck!
