Site Prep & Ideas

Evening all,

I was hoping someone may be able to help with some ideas on how I could best prep my new allotment plot for growing? As you can see from the picture, grass seems to have taken over. I imagine it might just be a question of simply digging the turf up? If anyone has any other ideas on how to prepare the site, I'd love to hear! If there's a way I can somehow compost the turf/grass too, that would be amazing.

Also any ideas on what to grow or sow at this time of year (flowers or veg) would be great.

Thank you so much as always

(Apologies for the photo, I can't seem to flip it the right way round)

Yes, dig up the grass and any other weeds. It should compost fine, or if you end up with a lot of soil as well like turf rather than individual clumps you can make a stack (grass to grass, soil to soil) and it should break down into loam over a year or maybe more if it gets dry, and you can use it in potting mix or spread it back on the allotment.
It looks as if you've got plants there that you might want to keep - rhubarb, globe artichokes (or maybe cardoons, can't really tell from the pic) and maybe some fruit bushes or canes in between the two and behind the artichokes, so you might want to weed more carefully around those, and see if there are any labels.
I've rotated the pic for you - easier to see it right way up.

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
