Growing gaura

Hi folks,
Growing gaura for the first time this year, so far they are just long single shoots. How do people grow them into bushy multistemmed plants? Do I pinch them or they will sort themselves out eventually?

@kippsattacks Not something I have ever tried. You would normally cut back in spring with a more mature plant. If I was growing it I would cut it back with the hope of a more sturdy plant.
    Perhaps others can add thoughts?

If you cut it at the red marks, you’ll get growth lower down but also have two sections which if pit in a glass of water will root very quickly and then you’ve got two more plants.

I’ve found Gaura to be exceptionally easy to root in water.

Good advice from @Mr. Vine Eye.  Just remember to take off the lower leaves of the two cuttings so they don't rot in the water.

I've grown them from seed and cuttings.  I'm not cutting them back quite yet as they can be tricky to get going again if there's a cold snap. I'd agree with pinching that one back to bush out.
  • Thank you all for your help.
I'll take a bit of top growth for now, hope they look better when planted in the ground in a few weeks
