Umbrella Plant - Dropping Leaves

DaveKearleyDaveKearley Posts: 130
Hi all

I have an umbrella plant, seems pretty healthy at first glance but seems to have some brown patches on a few leaves every day or so then they drop.

I'm way down the learning scale with houseplants - is this normal or a sign of disease or damage done by me maybe?

Can you give a bit more information please?
Are they older, lower leaves, or from all over? It's normal to lose a few older leaves from time to time.
Has there been any change to it's position or growing conditions before the leaf drop started?
How long have you had it? If recent, did it come from somewhere like a supermarket that displays the plants near the entrance where it's draughty?

    Hi
It seems to be mostly from the lower half of the plant, the top newer growth does not have the dual-colour pattern and they seem ok.

I've had it about a month, bought from a reputable garden centre i've used many times. It wasn't near the entrance but the whole place is large and can be draughty i guess.

Over watering? It should be allowed to get pretty dry between waterings.

I suspect it's just a reaction to the changes in environment. It'll have gone from controlled conditions in a nursery glasshouse, to the garden centre, to your home including transportation both stages. At some point it's probably been cooler than it would like, and maybe exposed to draughts, physical damage (a knock or being pressed against something can cause brown marks) etc. As long as the upper new growth is fine I don't think it's anything to worry about.

One of my biggest worries :)

I do let it dry quite  a bit then give a good water and allow to drain fully.

I can try giving less, but its about 2 weeks between at present
