Pruning Advice please for Brugmansia ( Angel's Trumpet)

dottywdottyw Posts: 16

I received this brugmansia 6 months ago ( see 1st pic.) and have been overwintering it in a basement where it is a bit cool with minimal light. After dropping all leaves it  has sprouted some new ones, see  pics #2 and #3.

1) should I remove the new leaves now as it will be in the basement for one more month ? Or should I leave them on and possibly move the plant upstairs earlier ?

2) The tallest stem, the only one with the V, is ca 4.5 foot ( 1.37 m)  tall incl the pot. I was going to prune the two tall stems, but then read that blooms only grow above a fork or Y, and that it can take several years for a Y to form. In our climate I can leave it outdoors only for ca 4 months a year.

I don't want to interfere with it's flowering capacity this year, in the contrary. But I also read that pruning stimulates grows.

Looking for advice from some more experienced members please.

I would cut it down to about 30cm on each stem, and repot it into a larger pot of rich compost.  If you use ordinary potting compost , add  some slow release fertliser as well, either blood fish and bone or a teaspoon of osmocote that lasts three months.  You can stand the cut off bits in water, reduce to 30 cm each, you will get two cuttings off each of the two tall stems. .  They will root in a windowsill in a four to six weeks, then pot them on. The cuttings will probably not flower this year but they will next.
