    What  is that red stuff under them,  really they need nothing other than watering in the first year if you haven’t had rain.
    I’ve got these growing out of a dry stone wall,  practically no soil there at all. 
    You can over cosset these trees.   I’ve never put anything extra on our hedge. 
    A good cut back does them good, and will encourage them to grow,  up to 2’ a year. 
    They will shoot out from where you cut them,  if you cut low, they’ll thicken from the bottom.
