Discolouration on lower trunk of pear tree

Hello, I’m hoping someone can help me to figure out what is going on with my weeping pear tree. The bottom part of the trunk is discoloured. It’s been in the ground for 2 years and I’m not sure if this is normal or a sign of a bigger problem. It is beginning to flower as normal. Thanks in advance.

I agree with pansy, that doesn't look well. Is it forming buds at the top? the bark we can see looks dead at the bottom, if it's like that all round it won't survive.

  • Thank you both. Yes it is forming buds. I just looked back through old photos and can see it wasn’t discoloured when planted 2 yrs ago but it has been like this for at least a year now. Here is a pic of more of the tree.

I first read this post and went away.  Other posters' comments have given me the confidence to come back.

It looks terminal.  Sap often remains above such damage and normal growth continures.  For a while.  Wait and see.

It might have been planted too deep.  Don't repeat this mistake.

  • Yes someone else mentioned too deep on another forum. I have managed to dig up and replant the tree so the flare is exposed. Do you think there is a chance of it improving or is it too late?

I wondered about the depth after I posted originally, I fear it may be rotting from the bottom up

  • Do you think it can be revived now that it has been planted at the correct depth?

to be honest I doubt if it will be anything to delight you now, even if it's not completely dead

  • :'( It honestly wasn’t / isn’t showing any signs of distress. Well I suppose there’s nothing more I can do now but keep fingers crossed but expect the worst!

I will hope on your behalf.

  • Just a quick update. The nursery has come back to me with this:

”the tree has budded well and is springing to life so the dark mark at the bottom of the plant should not be anything that affects the tree, its likely that it may be an older wound that sealed itself several years ago.”

that sounds promising but most people I have spoken to said it looks terminal. :( I really need this tree for privacy. I guess I need to wait it out but if anyone has any views they’d be willing to share I’d be very grateful. Thanks
