Pruning Ferns back?

Lizzie27Lizzie27 Posts: 12,494
Hi all, I need to dig up and transport some large ferns I'm giving to my sister.
They are Dryopteris 'The King', Hart's Tongue Fern and a Polystichum 'Tsussimense'.

Is it okay to cut back the fronds on all of these please? I had a look a day or two ago but couldn't see any new fronds coming through - is it too early for these?

  • There is no harm in cutting back old fronds, and it is rather early for new growth to be showing.

Yes, it’s fine to make it easier to transport them.  I’ve cut one of mine back today, there are new fronds just starting to appear.  I often tidy up evergreen and deciduous ferns at this time of year.

Many thanks @Alan Clark2 in Liverpool and @Plantminded. Hopefully I'll be able to do that tomorrow, weather permitting and get them potted up.
