Query about hydrangeas

bcpathomebcpathome Posts: 1,313
I have been given a large hydrangea, blue mop head ,for a Mothering Sunday gift . It’s obviously forced and is much too big for the pot it’s in . Should I leave it till it fades to re home it ( either in a much bigger pot or in the garden ) or go ahead and do it now ? I’m afraid I’ll kill it dead if I do the wrong thing .

Having been forced, it will be slightly tender, so you need to acclimatise it to the outdoors.
Then, if it were mine, I would wait until it stops flowering and then plant it out.
In the mean time keep it well watered.
How can you lie there and think of England

Ok thank you punk doc . I was thinking along those lines . Just that ,as it’s a gift and probably cost the earth , don’t want to lose it .

@bcpathome They are often are in pots that are too small. I would just check that the roots aren't coming out of the bottom of the pot. If so when you water ensure it soaks through. What a lovely gift.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

If it's been forced, maybe enjoy the flowers in a cool porch or conservatory or windowsill in a cool room for a couple of weeks before you harden it off to plant outside. A saucer under the pot will help to keep the compost moist until you plant it out if it's root bound.
