Root control

I have a tall hedge (some kind of conifer) that borders my back garden and quite a few roots are protruding through the lawn. How much root, if any, can be removed without damaging/killing the tree?

    If you could post photos it would be helpful, but for well established trees you can get away with lopping a few off, although they'll probably come back eventually.

    Conifers are shallow rooting, so the biggest problem would be undermining the conifer itself if too many were removed.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    If they are protruding, they will get damaged anyway.
