Leptospermum suddenly shedding leaves

Oh, a Leptospermum? What a shame. I bet it was lovely when in flower. Some are more hardy than others. I believe mine ,(a red damask) may be one of the hardier varieties. I would have preferred a single-petal type for  a wider selection of pollinators, but think mine is classed as semi-double and can still attract some insects. Did yours sort of suddenly look unwell one day or was it a slow demise?

I have checked it again and think @JennyJ your idea about something encroaching on it might be the answer, because I wrapped a nearby plant in burlap during bad weather. I just hope the compost is not too damp. Having said that, my garden soil in general, seems a lot damper than usual forcthis time of year.

Ive got quite a few of these, they are beautiful and bees go mad for them.  Yours has fresh growth at the top and buds forming, so looks good. Mine usually have some old foliage like yours. They dont like cold wet winters but the extreme heat wave got most of mine this year, possibly too dry im not sure. Burncoose thankfully had lots of stock for replacement.

Thank you @JessicaS, that is incredibly helpful to me! I am sorry most of yours were lost but glad not all and that Burncoose was able to help. I was surprised when you said the extreme heatwave got yours, but it was extreme wasn't it?! I think the winter wet, some cold temperatures and the wind didn't help mine but it is really reassuring to hear from someone who grows them what looks ok etc. I have had mine since autumn and there were sort of dormant looking burgundy coloured buds on it then which have since disappeared. The new buds are so small as to be difficult to detect, and have a silvery hue (maybe I need a microscope!)  I do feel relief that it is probably not the doom and gloom situation that I first feared!

Update: no buds at the moment, possibly any that were nascent were eaten by snails...I found some snails (quite well-camouflaged) sitting on the stems, munching away.

Just an update to say I think I have 3 very tiny buds. Two look pale green & 1 looks burgundy red, so I hope they are all actively growing. Does anyone else have buds or flowers? I kept finding snails on it by the way - I think it suffered from snail damage especially when under the fleece during the winter. @JessicaS I just wondered if any of yours had made it through to spring?
