Our sheep leave foxgloves alone. They must taste bad. New lambs will often try a leaf tip, the only time we get that kind of damage, but they don't go back for more. The small amount seems to do them no harm.
I knew of dairy cows that were addicted to foxgloves, the worse it did for them was to make them sleepy (according to the vet). My dog often self-medicates on grasses to make himself sick, I think it's natures way, as is avoiding really toxic plants.
One of the plants constituents is used in heart medication. Like so many plant's there's so much we still don't know about them but many are helping to keep us alive.

I 2nd what you said as I owe my life to yew trees (taxus). Taxotere chemo drug probably saved my life 25 years ago!
