There is no mistaking aggression for normal doggy playfighting / sumo wrestling.

Sorry, I meant in general, not meaning this thread, when describing what I believe are attacks. I'm just going by my local experience with dog owners. Anyone who has had dogs for a while or knows about their behaviour will except the odd nip (still unwanted but not as worrying) but still never a proper attack, which are absolutely horrible to witness.

I just saw this and it appears that unless you are likely to be injured protecting your dog, or you have an assistance dog, then the law doesn't protect you.

This is a link to a newspaper with quotes from the pdsa and rspca

  • Thank you everyone for your thoughts and comments.

They have enabled me to formulate a plan of action which I hope I never have to use.

If any other dog owner has a problem around our Village Green I will at least be able to advise them if required.

    That's the law in Spain.

Don't think Spain should a model for the treatment of dogs, though... what do you reckon, @Nollie?

@Hostafan1 you think we follow rules over here or summat?!

Well the Catalans are more law-abiding, but it was a free for all down in Andalucia. Dogs there were frequently off the lead in towns but are generally very well socialised - those big Spanish family groups help. I am more wary in the countryside where packs of scraggy dogs are sometimes left to roam - mostly by foreigners I might add.

@WAMS treatment of pet dogs by the natives is generally very good in my experience and owners really cosset them. It’s the treatment of working dogs, for guarding country houses and farms and hunting in particular, that is often distressing. Ive seen the former permanently chained up and tossed a bit of bread as their sole sustenance and the latter dumped on the road if they fail to be hunt well (countless abandoned Podencos fill rescue centres). Herding dogs are usually highly prized and cared for, Spanish Water Dogs especially.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
  • The cops in Spain were very quick to reprimand you if you were caught with a dog off lead even in the Ramblas.
The way they treat the working dogs is utterly appalling, things I couldn't repeat on this forum, not only dogs, horses and donkeys also suffered.
The Spanish on the whole do not believe in neutering and that's the main problem.
It's not all sun sea and Sangria I'm afraid.
