Penstemon - what to do now?

Good evening,
I planted this penstemon last year in late summer, it didn’t flower but has continued growing through the winter and looks a happy enough plant at the moment. Should I cut it back at all now or just let it be and hope it flowers this summer?

You do cut them back but I will wait a while as we still have cold weather forecast.
You'll soon see new growth from the base of the plant then you can cut the top growth off down to the base shoots.
They're lovely plants,  slugs don’t touch them so that’s an added bonus,  I’m changing a lot of my plants for Penstemons,  long flowering,  bees love them and they are pretty.
You can use the bits you cut off to grow more,   Just put them in a glass of water, keep indoors and they’ll root for you.

  • Thanks Lyn. I will take cuttings as you suggest and hold off from cutting back.
