Perhaps not a popular or helpful opinion but I don't like them.  We inherited 2 here, both suckering madly so needed a lot of clearing below and then the crowns raised so we could get by with the lawn mower without losing our heads.

One is out of view of the house and is now well formed and under control but the other is at the back end of our veg plot, chosen because it was a small donkey paddock fenced off from the rest so easy to keep the dogs out.   We put in a polytunnel with compost heaps behind it and the perisher is suckering into the polytunnel and the beds either side. PITA.

They both have dark, glaucous foliage which is desperately dull for 11.5 months of the year.  For the other two to three weeks there is a very unattractive contrast with bright yellow fluffy flowers which then turn brown and hang there for months before dropping seeds.

If I can persuade OH, the one behind the polytunnel is coming down or having a severe haircut this year.

  • I have seen a variety which has purplish dark foliage but no idea what the name is. I did try to grow that one but  it is quickly rose up to mimosa heaven.
