Time will tell @katefield54, and if it doesn't thrive,  it's a readily available shrub, so it won't be difficult to find a replacement  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

@katefield54 Sounds like a plan. I grow Mahonia media 'Charity'. Which I can recommend if you do decide to replace, work will need to be done to improve the soil.
Some plants do suffer from something called replant disease such as roses. I am not aware this applies to Mahonias.
There are also Mahonias that are grown for ground cover as well these are totally different.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

    M. Charity or  M. Winter Sun are the two which will be easiest to get, and  either will be fine @katefield54 .   :)
I can't remember which one mine is @GardenerSuze - but it's one of those two!
I've not heard of a problem with replanting either, but it might be worth checking.

    M. aquifolium is the lower growing, more ground covering one, so that's not so suitable. There might be bigger varieties of it, but the other two are the ones which get the real height.   :)

I actually tried to remove one from my garden because it was growing right on the boundary where the new fence needed to go.  Clearly I didn't get all the roots out though because I now have another one growing in the same place but just inside the boundary.  Appears to be rather tough to kill.

    Tomorrow is another day
