Bush dropping leaves! Please help

Hi everyone.  I am a total newbie gardener and have inherited what was a nice bush out in our front garden. We have been in the house for 5 years and the bush has always looked good and has never really dropped any leaves. However over the last few months it has been dropping leaves and now looks very patchy.

I would appreciate some advice as to what we should be doing (if anything) to try and revive the bush.

many thanks in advance,

Giles

That is Griselinia littoralis.  It can be susceptible to severe cold, especially after a dry summer like the one we had last year.  Give it time, it should recover when the weather warms up.  I've seen a mature hedge be totally blackened in a previous winter.  It recovered and now looks fine.  You could help your plant recover by covering the ground below with an organic mulch which will help retain moisture and protect the roots from temperature extremes.  Apply the mulch when the ground is moist, but not frozen.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

  • Thank you for the advice! Much appreciated

Just to give you more reassurance there has been quite a lot of queries about Griselinia littoralis this past week or two @gileshermitagejSr_51cZ so you aren't on your own.

It's the combination of various weather factors that have been a problem this winter for many plants, including Griselinia, so hopefully yours will be ok @gileshermitagejSr_51cZ - and fingers crossed it'll recover well and won't have such a tough time next winter.  :)

Look back a bit on this forum.  There is a lot about Griselinia.  I think of it as more of a seaside plant.

Hi Giles, a discussion came up the other day about a possible problem with usernames. Just wondering how your long username originated? Is gileshermitagejSr_51cZ what you intended or did it just happen outside of your control? Thanks.

  • Hi, I’m not sure I even selected my username so don’t really know what happened there. It has obviously took some info from my details?

Thanks, that's interesting. When I joined I had to register first and then set up an ID for use on this forum, which included a username (an alias if you like) & a password and then any other optional info & preferences. But strange things have been happening of late, like our (optional) location data suddenly disappearing.
