They come in a wide variety of cultivars. Some better than others, so take your time to choose carefully.
They also come in male and female versions (dioecious), the female having attractive berries later. But I think they need a male. So if you buy 5 get 4 female and i male.
I like scent that is free. In both senses.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand. "Have nothing in your garden that you don't know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
@Fairygirl, i've posted a pic. So its about 4 foot wall, with pavers as ground cover. I have a space for 2 plants, more if I take out more pavers. I know it not the right perspective with low sun at this time of year to gauge sun light. I do think it's fit partial sun category behind the wall. The square area in the middle is full sun light all day. So does it fit with the Skimmia Rubella needs?. The two plants in there at the moment are 2 year old hydrangeas which I plan to relocate.
@Skandi, thank you. Good to know you have success with south facing wall. Yes they smell fantastic.
@GardenerSuze, I must try and find a simpler PH tester, I think my soil is neutral but I am not sure. I do know its loamy in texture.
@bédé thank you so much, more research for me it seems. Okay need to chose cultivars, I was just looking at the Rubella variety. As I am looking for two plants, would one each of male and female be okay. Thanks for the pointers.
Obviously I cannot be sure but generally speaking if it grows near to you there is every chance it will grow well for you too. Just out of interest what colour are the flowers on your hydrangas?
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
