Will my uprooted bay tree re-root in a stumpery?

I had a very large multistem bay shrub dug up and chopped down 3 weeks ago, I'd like to submerge it in my new stumpery but I'm worried it could reroot...is this a possibility?

  • If the bay stump cut down was still alive there is a chance it would regrow if any of the roots were in soil in the stumpery. Bay can be surprisingly tenacious about hanging onto life. I would be very cautious if you do not want the bay any more. I would leave it in a corner to die and begin to rot down before burning or take it to the council tip somehow if you cannot do that.

If you follow the original method to create a stumpery, submerge it upside down, with all the roots upwards, not in contact with the soil. The submerged trunk in the soil won't root.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.
