A mate of mine works for National Grid, he says they get lots of calls for collapsed poles but they end up being telegraph poles, they call it Ice loading, usually caused when the telegraph pole has gone rotten. Common occurrence apparently.

My neighbours tree surgeon came today and removed the conifer, and topped the Scots pine, my neighbour wants to see how it looks before deciding whether to completely remove it. But as least there is less chance of future damage and I'll get more light into my garden. I'm going to completely replant my border this summer now there's a better chance of being able to grow plants there.

    Some before & after photos..

That should make a huge difference to the light in your garden @LeadFarmer. They were certainly large trees, weren’t they?

Thy were indeed. I was sat on my patio late this afternoon and it was nice to have sun (from the west) on my face, which I never got at that time of day when the conifer was there.

It will spur me on to replant that border, the plants that are currently there are the same plants that were there when I moved into this house in 2007 and are quite bland, I refer to them as 'car park' plants. I left it alone as it was a difficult border to grow things in. But now it has more light and will hopefully retain moisture better it gives me an opportunity to have a rethink.

It is good to see your buddleia globosa looking ok, too, it seems to be growing?!

Yes I think it is. In the frost it looks sad a droopy, but soon springs back to life.
