I'm sure there are plugs and plugs. But isn't the idea that plugs enabled one not to disturb the roots. When planted, the roots should grow throught the open mesh of bags.
I recently bought some Yew trees as plugs and planted them entire. I used to buy ivy plants that had been rooted in plugs and sold in 3" pots; I used to root my own in compressed peat plugs (Jiffy 7 pellets ??).
The plugs that Monty Donne demonstrates are held together merely by the roots themselves (I guess). But that is only for home use.
