We have three massive plants that were a gift from the previous allotment holder which have been split dozens of times. I think we've had it for 20 years now and it does really well with benign neglect. It gets a little home made compost every now and then I think, I don't look after it as it's my dad's end of the plot. It did fantastic this summer even though it got nearly no water throughout. I think once they get to a certain size they can cope with nearly everything and I think this has been there for 40-50 years now.
Our 90 year old neighbour has some fantastic rhubarb and she hasn't been able to garden for a very long time. Again it's very old from what I can remember and sailed through our last summer on our extremely free draining sandy soil.
