I have newts but no frogs. Wish it was the other way around. I didn’t know it was an either or situation!
It isn't necessarily an Either Or situation.  Newts will eat frog spawn but if your pond is of a reasonable size and well planted, they can coexist.

Certainly @philippasmith2  although only a few tadpoles make it to maturity,  if the pond is suitable they will spawn enough to make a healthy frog population,  some of ours must have survived over the years as our pond was cover end completely in spawn this year,  so every year must get better.
Frogs are funny things though,  my daughter lives on a little housing estate,  no one has a pond but there are lots of frogs about,  they’ve spawned in her outside loo, in bowls or buckets of water the kids have left around the garden,  last year she got a Butler sink,  they’ve spawned in that as well.
She spends a lot of her time rescuing them from the roads this time of the year for fear of them getting run over.   She pops them over the nearest garden hedge.
Maybe they are just fussy fickle creatures when finding somewhere to spawn.  I can’t see that there’s a lack of frogs.

  • For years we had dozens of frogs.
For the last 3 yrs not a single frog newt or toad.
Nothing has changed,so I am at a loss.
  • We  have seen a decline in our frog population over the past few years.  We have had a small amount of frog spawn this year but haven't seen a single tadpole.  We disturb the occasional frog when gardening, but that's all.

  • A new pond last year in July, but sadly yet to see a frog.

I have tadpoles in my pond and also mother frog . The tadpoles have been there for weeks and weeks but don’t seem to be developing at all.We have been covered in thick cloud with no sun and a n/ e wind and no warmer than14 deg for weeks now ,could this be the reason they aren’t developing? I wish summer would come ,I’m sick of being bundled up in pullovers since last October. What’s happening to flaming June ?

If there are no suitable habitats in your area for frogs, you'll have to wait a while @sutton.langley. Even if there is another pond or a spot they use, it doesn't mean they'll come to your pond. I have years where there's none, because we live close to a Nat. Trust garden, so there's no need for them to go elsewhere.  :)
They don't live in ponds anyway, they really only use them for spawning. They spend most of their time in damp, shady areas - under rocks or similar, among other vegetation.

You've got our usual weather for spring and early summer @bcpathome, only without the rainfall. We've got the sun here for a change, and it's not normal at all. I keep thinking it's July or something, although July isn't often hot and sunny either!
14 or 15 is fine for me. That's what the mornings have mostly been   ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • A few days ago I was sat next to my pond watching the fish and also noticed bees every so often landing on a bit of grass overhanging  the pond   coming for a drink , when all of a sudden a splash and out jumped a frog hiding under the grass just missed catching one of the bees .  Never seen anything like it before .

If conditions don’t suit the tadpoles they can hang about in that stage until next year.

  • Regarding no frogs, Fairygirl, we are on a farm, which is a  bit isolated. I have seen frogs in area of pond, so that was partly why we introduced the pond. I guess one gets inpatient!
