I completely agree that wires aren't the best choice for these hydrangeas and they would rather cling to something flat but the long searching shoots they throw out can be tied to the wires where they will eventually become woody and self supporting. It does mean you need to be vigilant to stop wayward growth going away from your framework but even on our house we have long thin growth that just flaps about, not attached to the wall behind it, so needs to be tied in from time to time. I've seen pictures years ago that a friend took in Japan where it was grown as ground cover or as a bush. I have also seen it grown over arches that most would consider unsuitable and it looked pretty good. These a picture in the attached link
So I do think they are more versatile than some might think but they do look far better in certain situations and there are probably better options for other plants in more modest gardens. It's not really a plant to be squeezed in, like a wisteria, but one that shines in the right surroundings.
