Garden turf

Hello everyone,

We recently bought our first home and made the decision to remove pavement from our back garden to support the environment and have more biodiversity in it. After picking up all the slabs and breaking down the layers of concrete, we came across sand mix and gravel. Based on the photos (can add more if required) would it be okay to place top soil (then turf) on existing materials? We would really appreciate any advice that you may have.

Many thanks

I'd say so. A good few inches of topsoil to give the turf plenty of root room and nutrients. 👍

Yes - as long as there's no problems with drainage below that - ie a solid layer of something, some topsoil mixed with what's there, then the usual firming, raking, levelling etc, will be fine. The ground is often quite compacted when it's had slabs on it for a while, so break it all up well.
Pick turf that suits your site and climate too.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Be aware that many turf suppliers use plastic netting in the turf to enable them to cut it thinner.  They claim the plastic is biodegradable but if it is it takes a long time to break down.  It is still clearly visible in turf I had laid over 10 years ago.
  • That’s brilliant, we will crack on next weekend! Thank you everyone for your advice and have a great weekend!
