It’s fine, cheap is ideal, most of mine (about 60) came from cuttings from cheap plants or free ones, Try to find a place where it’s in the sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. Don’t put it too far in a corner they grow very big in all directions. Don’t cut it back at all until beginning to mid April, unless you’re in a warm area, then just take off the top one or two sets of buds for this year. The leaf buds on the stems will produce this years flowers, the ones coming from the base will be next years.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
@bédé I disagree, I've had lots of cheap or half dead plants which are still thriving - including a Poundshop raspberry which I've had for 13 years, and a £5 Fargesia I bought 15 years ago. Price tags don't necessarily reflect quality.
Thanks so much to all, especially @Lyn for specifics on which growth the flowers would come from and when.
I am a big fan of cheap plants, though free ones are even better. Clearly, I will have to find a good spot for this one as it seems to want to live... and I plan to move house before it gets too big. 😉
Lots of good advice, specially from Lyn. As the name suggests, they need a lot of water. Could I have some more pictures of the dog please?
Thank you. I will put it back in its damp corner while I figure out the best spot for it. And just for you, @Nanny Beach, to help you give the most precise and pertinent hydrangea advice, a bad dog hiding tennis balls in the pile of sticks intended for "wildlife." 😁

"O brother and sister, I bid you beware / Of giving your heart to a dog to tear." 💔
Hope Luna is coping OK, and you, of course.
