Fungus / mould growing on privet hedge trunk

Can anyone identify what this is on the trunk of this privet hedge? It's on a series of 6-8 trunks in a row.  Thanks

    @tom.d.derbyshire I think it might be dead is it hollow? Privet is suseptable to honey fungus but I am unable to say if it is that. Are the other plants in your garden healthy.
    I don't know if anyone else can offer advice. My knowledge of Privet is limited. Welcome
    I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
