Most SM's surely sell daffs in pots which are either clearly in flower or have buds forming. Onions are not generally available in flowering form as far as I have seen. Best advice to the uninitiated would be not to sniff the daff flowers until you've already bought your onions - or vise versa. I wouldn't worry about Mr. Rees Mogg - surely he wouldn't lower himself to actually go shopping would he ?
I did read about somebody complaining that daffs were missing from their home delivery order from a supermarket, and getting a refund on them. They then discovered them in the salad chiller of their fridge. Their 'other half' thought they were spring onions.
