@Topbird, I'm always amazed when there's no not-so-secret poo in the bird bath. All of them drink and bathe in it, except the jackdaws, and the pigeons like to just perch on the edge while they decide which dish has the most seed in - maybe they're house trained, should I put a couple of magazines out I wonder? 🤔😄
Not only are gardeners nice they are adept at going off topic too!
A hundred years or so ago when I began gardening (at the age of a bout 10) I was gifted a lot of Sweet pea seedlings. Once I began gardening in earnest when we got our first house again I was gifted many plants and advice by local gardeners. None of them wanted anything in return, so over the years I have tried to do the same. One of them made a telling remark. "A plant shared is a plant and a friend gained."
I had to create a separate bathing nursery pool in a shallow corner of my pond so I didn't worry about the birds falling in the deep end.... There is a separate solar pump to keep the water clean and they love it for drinking and bathing, but only when I'm hiding, they are bashful!
We have a variety of "plungepools" sipping stations etc . The funniest is a large concrete manhole cover with two small curved holes where the wire/metal handles have rusted away and these two little holes are favourite for the Dunnocks and Blue tits to drink and bathe in.
Also Nuthatches and they use the smaller shallow plant saucers as they have such short legs. Three large 20 and 35cm plant saucers do duty for Crows, Wood pigeons, Maggies, down to Blackbirds and Robins etc. I clean and refill twice most days. We find the Wood pigeons and townies leave it most mucky with a grey film from their feather dust. Not many poop in them but some occasionally do.... Butt not sure who it is that doo's the do do's.
